Problems Associated with Curricular Reform in Medical Edication

Abstract
In response to a questionnaire on 77 key-member professors of medical colleges regarding their opinion on medical education, 800 of them expressed the necessity of reviewing the contents and standard and the method of the medical education in Korea. Although they understand that their primary duty is education and next research they stated that a large portion of their time is taken up by their clinical and miceilaneous work. 90% of the professors who responded to the questionnaire replied that the current method of medical education of delivering biology-oriented knowledge and technique and hospital-centered skill, which are indispensable for education of specialists, should be abolished with the primary goal of education placed at teaching knowledge and skill regarding the dynamic equilibrium between man and his enviromment, and medical education should be reformed so that medical services may answer the need of the changing society. In this connection, 83% of them agreed to the idea that the standard of education, instead of being entirely left to the decision of the department, should be adjusted to the pre-established educational goal. However, the greatest difficulty involved in this educational reform is the current department-centered medical education. It is preferable that, of the various functions of each department, that is, education, research and administration, the educational function should be controlled by a separate controlling body.
